Ovid’s Metamorphoses #020/111: “Semele”

What this project is about.

This one is from Book 3.

How long it took to read this (aloud): 4 mins 34s

What it’s “about”: Juno, who really doesn’t understand that Jove has decided they are in an open marriage, disguises herself as an old woman, and convinces the preggers human Semele to ask Jove to fuck her like he fucks Juno. Jove sighs, knowing how it will turn out and… Semele is burned to a crisp. But the kid is saved, so that’s alright then…

Words I didn’t know: None

Quotable quotes: xx

The goddess was/more violent than just….

“What have I gained by all my threats and warnings?

That girl must feel my anger, not my words.”

He groaned, for she could not unsay

What she desired, nor he his promise. High in

His agony he climbed the hills of heaven

[he surely knew that Juno had got inside Semele’s head and set this up!!]

How it lands to my eco-sensibility: The gods are absolute fucking assholes. We are like gods.

Obvious allusions, ways it was used (that I am aware of already) : xx

What I know I didn’t ‘get’: xx

To my knowledge, who’s used it why/how (RACC): xx

Further research questions: xx

Anything else: xx
