Initiator movements

“The first category consists of those rare, but exceedingly important, initiator movements that signal or otherwise set in motion an identifiable protest cycle. Historical examples of such movements would include Solidarity in Poland and the American civil rights movement. The second and more “populous” category of movements includes those spin-off movements that, in varying degrees, draw their impetus and inspiration from the original initiator movement.”
Doug McAdam in Traugott, M. ed (1995) Repertoires and Cycles of Collective Action
