Compulsory (institutional) optimism – or “from straws in the wind to dust in the wind”

I just read an article on a newspaper website about a New Politics that is apparently coming. The article came recommended by people I (still) respect, and was written by a commentator who is sincere, diligent and intelligent.

And you know where this is going….

The article was, if not actually pants, then, well, pants-adjacent.

Throw in a few recent data points, then make mention of some Long Ago stuff. Bish bosh. Your editor is happy, your readers are mostly happy. You’ve told an upbeat tale, where There Is Still Hope.

You haven’t talked about hype cycles, or the very predictable ways in which these “movements” become exhausted (co-opted, repressed etc) and those in them mostly scattered to the four winds.

You haven’t talked about the dynamics within these groups (and individuals). You haven’t had your editor saying “wow, this is a bit bleak.”

You haven’t burned any bridges with people who you might want to interview/get react quotes from in future.

You haven’t looked at your own complicity in propagatig previous (failed, obvs) waves of false hope.

So, a job well done! Everyone’s happy, except, oh, I don’t know, present generations, future generations (however many there might be), and every other fucking fucked fucking species on the fucking planet.

Do. Better.

  1. Marc, it seems to me that there are two ways to survive in our world,
    1) say nothing
    2) say what people want to here
I call it the stay safe method, it works, but it’s boring.
