. As Tanner explains:
you ended up with aspects of the [mining] tax that the industry objected to that were impossible to debate in public because they were just too complicated . . . By the time you’d explained the concepts 90 per cent of the public had switched off . . . whenever you can in politics be on the simple side when there’s a fight . . . we were trapped on the complex side and that made it very, very difficult to prosecute the argument.
