So, if you care about climate change (for instance), and campaign for something to be done about it, you will quickly be called a zealot or a hypocrite.
If you are a primitivist, avoiding all fossil fuel usage etc etc, then you are a crazed zealot who doesn’t understand how Ordinary People live.
If you aren’t a primitivist, if you once took a bus to a climate change meeting instead of cycling, then you’re just another middle-class hypocrite and why should anyone listen to you.
The beauty of this is that everyone is one or the other, there is no escape and rather than addressing the issues, an ad hominem can be trotted out with zero effort. That’s some cognitive conservation right there…
