I wasn’t the first to come up with the term the Fafocene, but I am the first to make regular efforts to popularise it as a word for thinking about when we are.
Short version – while terms like ‘anthropocene’ hope to capture a geological era – in which human activity is a discernible factor on the planet’s systems (air, water, soil etc), other people protest that it flattens the politics (#NotAllHumans) and propose Plantationocene, Capitalocene, Chthulucene etc.
Me, I go with Fuck Around, Find Out (FAFO) cene.
I have written about it here – Kayfabe in the Fafocene– and here – Affect and the Fafocene: kayfabe, hypernormalisation and Leonard Cohen.
As promised/threatened, I am going to start doing blog posts, on this site but occasionally also over on All Our Yesterdays about this stuff.
