Husband – 20th Century in Cartoons – 1970s

So, I am reading – a decade a day – the late great Tony Husband’s book The 20th Century in Cartoons” (to be clear, he selected them, he didn’t draw them.)  See also The Onion’s Our Dumb Century.

This decade, in my mind is one of…the American empire getting a bloody nose, stagflation etc.

NB Nixon was not, despite what is written on page 168, impeached. The process was started, but he resigned before he could be impeached. This is a bit sloppy, tbh.

Wally Fawkes (Thatcher’s favourite cartoonist) – Fawkes also achieved success illustrating cartoons under the pen name “Trog”. His most notable work in this business was Flook, a comic strip which ran in The Daily Mail newspaper from 1949 to 1984. Initially aimed at children, the strip evolved over time into a gentle satire of British politics. When Flook ended he continued to illustrate until failing eyesight forced him to retire in 2005 at age 81,[1] leaving him to concentrate solely on his clarinet playing.

Should add One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich to my reading list….

Bud Handelsman

What I didn’t know:

Events I hoped/expected to see but were missing (but there’s only so much you can get in!):  Perhaps a couple of cartoons about the second cold war, neutron bombs etc? Maybe in the 1980s…

Three best cartoons
