Mike Seccombe’s customarily excellent reporting (“electric vehicles policy stuck in low gear”) put me in mind of a front page story on the Adelaide Advertiser I recently encountered.
Under the headline “Addiction to cars must go – Minister” the relevant federal minister said “everyone has his role to play, even if it’s to wal to the shop instead of taking the car.” and continued with the observation that “a combination of ego, frustration, tension and alcohol caused accidents.”
The Advertiser article closed with a Professor telling a Friends of the Earth seminar that car exhausts were “the most brazen aspect of the pollution situation.”
Of course, I’m an academic researcher, with a fascination about how much we knew of the climate crisis, how early, (as per my website allouryesterdays.info). The Advertiser article I have quoted was from Monday 4th September 1972.
I would say there is nothing new under the sun, but that is not quite true – the quantities of carbon dioxide and methane in the atmosphere are higher than any point in human history, and there is rather a lot of trouble ahead, regardless of whether (seems unlikely) Labor sorts out a real EV policy.

and that Tiser story is here –

I always walk to the local shops, it gets me some exercise, even though I find walking difficult and slow. However, it is noticeable that very few people do walk to the shops. It’s difficult to know how far people have travelled but they can’t all have come a great distance; in fact I know there are some who have travelled no further than I do. The presence of nearby out of centre shopping malls doesn’t help either!
Hi Marc,
I hope you are enjoying your extended trip to the land of your birth!
My comment on this article is:-
