Co-optation

The use of an NGO as a ‘partner/stakeholder’ in a business or industry’s “Corporate Social Responsibility” effort.

NGOs gain some credibility (but may lose other), and are basically in an impossible situation – if they are offered a chance to ‘change the system from within’ then not taking it opens them up to charges of ‘mindless oppositionism’ etc etc.
