Book! Carbon Capture and Storage in the United Kingdom: History, Policies and Politics

This book (title is self-explanatory) has just come out. You can see table of contents etc (and buy it!) here.

The history of CCS is (imho) both fascinating and important. CCS has a lot longer history than many of its advocates (and opponents) understand. This book is not the final word on the subject, but gives enough of an overview for the reader to do further digging and thinking.

After setting the scene with a explanation of climate change (overflowing bathtubs and duvets) and the Anthropocene it then explains a bit about technofixes and why we love them, the Multiple Streams Approach and hype cycles. There are the three empirical chapters, tackling the 1970s to 2002, then 2002 to 2015 and then the “Kipling Manouevre” in 2016-18 and the aftermath of that (with some mention of Greenhouse Gas Removal and Direct Air Capture). A final chapter looks at what may be coming and offers some words of advice to researchers, observers and participants. In amongst it all there are cartoons (thanks Marc Roberts and David Pope!) and a few footnotes pointing to episodes of classic Doctor Who. So, a standard academic tome…

With many thanks to Sam Gunsch, Mark Sullivan, Sarah Irving, Matthew Lockwood and others
