Octavia Butler’s words of wisdom

I absolutely loved The Parable of the Sower – need to read the sequel…

“Choose your leaders
with wisdom and forethought.
To be led by a coward
is to be controlled
by all that the coward fears.
To be led by a fool
is to be led
by the opportunists
who control the fool.
To be led by a thief
is to offer up
your most precious treasures
to be stolen.
To be led by a liar
is to ask
to be told lies.
To be led by a tyrant
is to sell yourself
and those you love
into slavery.”

― Octavia E. Butler, Parable of the Talents

Of course, Wilfred Bion would argue that groups select their most damaged member to be leader. So it goes.

  1. …I missed this yesterday, and seeing this now, have the following [paraphrased] thought to add to it:

“Having been sold into debt slavery by those one loves/loved (1694 in the UK; 1913 in US), one has embraced the tyrant of greed-as-a-social-go[]d. Within this all-but-denied-condition one’s homeostasis demands supporting lies. Simply, one is being led by socially trusted motivated reasoning. What is thereby treasured – the means for the ‘privileged’ – and what is comforting to the self in the moment and can be stolen. This is the means for being deluded and led by thief and opportunists. One is being a fool and thereby led by a fool. If one’s foolish fears controls, one is being led by a coward (i.e., observed to be lacking in wisdom and forethought). If one feels they have chosen the wrong leaders …”Think Different”⁉️”
