Signs of the times – temperatures, Greenland, tariffs etc

This year I am going to write something short, mostly daily, about what is going on – “2 cents on the Arrived Ecological Debacle” (2cotAED). I have to write it; you don’t have to read it. If you DO read it, feel free to tell me how wrong I am (and hopefully why). Re: the debacle aspect: in 2004 the English writer Sara Maitland  wrote about the “pending ecological debacle.” The expression stuck with me; it’s a debacle because it was foreseen, warned about and was avoidable. Well, it’s no longer really “pending” is it?

So, here’s a small fraction of the fun and games over the last 24 hours.

January was the warmest January ever. La Nina is not helping.

January 2025 was quite unexpectedly the warmest January on record at 1.75C above preindustrial, beating the prior record set in 2024. This is despite the presence of La Niña conditions in the tropical Pacific, with the El Niño event of 2023/2024 long faded. http://www.theclimatebrink….

We are stuck in a permanently high temperature shituation.

And in Greenland?

and this in the Grauniad

“The biggest thing I was surprised about was how fast this was happening. One previous study showed changes over the scale of decades … and now we’re showing this happening on scales of five years,” said Dr Tom Chudley, an assistant geography professor at Durham University and lead author of the study.

Also in the Grauniad, it turns out that – as per Barry Commoner – “there is no ‘away'” and microplastics seem – on the basis of a small number of autopsies – to be accumulating in our brains. .

And also the tariffs as the shiny object, distracting from the Treasury data grab.  Though let’s not ascribe them the smarts…

I mean, this is a coup. This is absolutely astonishing. And it, as various people have said, it’s really hard to talk about this stuff without sounding like a lunatic, because it’s so extraordinary and people can’t believe that it’s happening.

Oh, the other thing is the Vitol report from the Financial Times about oil demand keeping rising till 2040; highly entertaining.

We’re not going to get out of this. No one “in charge” is taking any of this seriously. Those who are taking it seriously are outnumbered, outspent, demoralised and disorientated.

Meanwhile, people with access to the same facts as me persist in breeding, which simply staggers me. But I was never much cop at genuine empathy, was I?

  1. Marc, it is not a matter that “people cannot believe it’s happening”, rather, it’s a case that people have put environmental degradation into the too hard basket. As a result there is no pressure on governments to take any real action, so the degradation continues!!
Until people (world wide) pressure their governments to take action, nothing will change and I see no sign of that.
