In his letter (April 30) responding to Anjana Ahuja’s column about the now fixed Voyager 1 (“Rejoice! Voyager 1 is back from the dead”, Opinion, April 26), Professor Rosario Iaconis speculates that when in the “far-flung future, some advanced extraterrestrials come across this strange, mechanised visitor from another planet, perhaps they will appreciate the sounds and images of our pale blue dot”. The 1984 film Starman, directed by John Carpenter and starring Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen, has an alien cartographer (the Bridges role) discovering Voyager 2’s gold disc and acting on its “come see us” invite. Approaching Earth, Starman is — inevitably — shot down by the US military and then pursued across the US by men with vivisection in mind. Welcome to Earth, enjoy your stay.
