Second (well, further) thoughts on “The Long Walk”

I saw it, I liked it, but I almost certainly won’t watch it again.

The further thoughts are these – there is a lot of genre play going on here.

It’s a slasher film but the Jason Voorhees is the state, bumping them off until the Final Girl (but in this case, a Final Boy).

It’s a World War Two (esp war in the Pacific) film, with a group of men facing danger, including the kid, the writer who is taking notes for his Big Novel, the asshole, the preppie, the smart one, the everymen who get along…

And beneath it, as per my review, there’s the politics. I’d show it not only with Top Gun: Maniac but also Punishment Park and They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?

Oh, and there is something about the fact that you never see any footage of The Long March, or people watching on their televisions. Perhaps this is merely so you are not distanced in any way? Postman would have a field day…
