Of WASPs and WESPs: power, perception and our baked-in doom

tl;dr – our societal systems of perception, especially of what is “normal” or “reliable” are dominated by white supremacism and patriarchy. This will not end well.

Short one, because I should be feeding moorhens and doing a dozen good projects but I’m not.

WASP stands for “White Anglo Saxon Protestant” – the “normal” for US and UK society. (Normal does not mean good!).

In this brilliant (imo, ymmv) blog post, “Plausible Deniability” on the London Review of Books, Stefan Tarnowski points out how the atrocities (genocide, according to many experts, including Israeli Jewish ones (1)) in Gaza aren’t quite real or undeniable because there are not white Western journalists “on the ground.” Doesn’t matter how much footage there is of what is going on, there’s a lack of WESPs.

“WESPs?”, you ask. WESP is my own coinage (another one).

It stands for White English-Speaking Penis.

Until it’s been validated by a WESP, all knowledge is provisional. It doesn’t matter where the idea came from (Miss Triggs), until a WESP has said it, other WESPs ain’t gonna be convinced.

There is absolutely nothing new in what I have just said. People of colour, women and some dissident WESPs themselves have been pointing out how fucked up this is for (checks notes) centuries. At least.

The only thing I bring to the table today is “WESP.”

At some point I may write about how the WESP mentality (akin to Neal Ascherson’s Dumb-bell World) means we just don’t “get” what we are doing to the planet (and what is starting to do to us). But not today.

Right, now to the moorhens.

  1. One of the few positive things about the disaster we are in now is that the wasps and wesps (and youre right to include Israelis) – those steering the ship – perhaps have less credibility than ever.
