Fish, lakes, trawlers, men, guns, banks…

A few years ago I did a gushing review (this is unusual for me) of an academic book (see previous brackets, only more so). It was a book about “Energy Fables” and how power relations are buried in the assumptions of various “common sense” phrases like “low-hanging fruit” and the “energy trilemma.”

I don’t think I included my irritation with the homily “if you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, if you teach a man to fish, you feed him for life.” This sententious platitude – ignoring as it does all questions of land distribution, resource grabs, naked political power – can be subverted with “if you allow a mega-factory trawler to empty the lake/oceans of fish so fat First Worlders can get fatter, then it doesn’t matter that much if he knows how to fish, now does it? You STUPID FUCKING ASSHAT” (that’s my polite version, btw).

Well, just the other day I stumbled on the following, which surely needs no gloss…

  1. What percentage of our species has sufficient self-awareness to know that (1) they possess the aforesaid “world”; (2) feel that it is being robbed; (3) experience the agency to render “robbing” other than pious self-delusion?

    1. It’s not a high percentage, but that’s largely because a) systems of indoctrination have been perfected b) the struggle for day to day survival means that even if people have managed to understand the world, what can they do about it? And it’s too painful to think about the injustices/”impending” (arriving) apocalypses if you can’t do owt about them…

      1. If Yorkies what to feel ‘nowt bout owt’ is a thing, is not such a linguist trap may and [may] render a psychology (and feeling) that ‘owt for nowt’ is rational⁉️ 🙃

Until 1638 my surname linage came from Castle Donington …and maybe left it (as it left earlier Norman conquested territory when arriving in 1066) …for new conquests – and this due to a shared Purtianical motivated reasoning that agency is anything but a nothing thing.

…as an alternate view regarding #3 and that pious self-delusion thing [which is perpetually oriented to see others, and other worlds, to conquer] …& this – and as a biological prerogative – in the [vain] hope (generally, and within a heterosexual male orientation/pointed point of view) of getting lucky⁉️

Physics says such ‘luck’ has limits⁉️
