Podcast recommendation: “All the Right Movies”

Moorhens eh, donchajustloveem? Well, I do, and do a most-days 90 minute round-trip walk along a canal towpath, throwing them aquatic bird food. This gives me the opportunity to both narrate stuff into a voice-recorder and also listen to podcasts.

I will do a proper “these are the podcasts I currently find myself coming back to again and again, here are their strengths and weaknesses” post soon-ish, but for now this

The “All the Right Movies” (nice title!) podcast hits a sweetspot. The three men (yes, I know) who run it clearly love film and are well-versed. The episodes are possibly a little bit longer than they need to be, but because it is just the right mix of relatively close “reading” and interesting background about the making and the context of the film in question, the time flies by (especially if you listen at 1.25 or 1.5 speed…)

So far have listened to them going on about “The Terminator” (1984) and “Starship Troopers” (1997).

The latter was a favourite of mine – I saw it twice at the cinema, once in Bristol and once in Paris. I think what the ATRM people miss though – and perhaps it isn’t so hard to do? – is that it is clear (to me at least!) that at the end of the film (spoiler!) it is clear that the humans are losing their war with the “bugs.” The final promotional video shows basically children in combat roles, presumably because all the older cohorts have been used up. It’s a blink-and-you-miss-it-moment, but an important one. Turns out fascism is bad for your society – who knew.

Anyway, that aside, the ATRM series will continue to accompany me as I try and support the next generation of … moorhens.
