Of “open letters” about #climate -cry me a river

Short post – supposed to be decluttering my pigsty of a study [Take This(1) Seriously, dammit, Marc].

Yesterday some “elders” put out a letter about how the COP process was no longer (sic) fit for purpose and had lost its way blah blah blah. Shoot me now.

I had a reaction that I suspect is unique (fwiw). I … thought of that dreary smug letter (see from page 6 of this dreary anthology) by some “elders” at Climate Camp in 2008 at Kingsnorth (I wasn’t there, I’d bailed from the whole sorry shitshow the previous year). You know, the one where they chided everyone for being Insufficiently Radical and how it was all no longer fit for purpose and had lost its way.

In both cases

a) written by some very smug and over-self-promoted mediocrities who

b) had been warned repeatedly that shit was going badly wrong but were too busy racking up the ego points/career points whatever to even acknowledge the critique and in any case were

c) too unimaginative, unskilled and frankly spineless to try to change the parameters/the incentive structures.

I could go on, but I need to sort out that Room of One’s Own as the Woolfs close in.

Footnote

(1) By “This” I guess I mean using the time/skills/knowledge to the best of my abilities to say stuff that could have in theory made a difference but a) nobody is listening and b) it’s too late to do anything but prepare to meet our “maker” (i.e. contingency and molecules).
