This post, about Tom Lehrer, might help explain where I am coming from.
In 1965 Tom Leher said that if we were going to get any songs about World War 3 “we’d better start writing them now.”
Ditto for the Anthropocene (others have made a start – I will blog separately on that).
So I am asking, is anyone who is doomer or doomer adjacent – and can sing – a bit interested in doing a parody/homage/whatever of Twisted Sister’s May 1984 song “We’re not gonna take it”?
And we could make an accompanying video with the usual screenshots of graphs, disasters and so on.
It would be polite, I guess, to ask Dee Snider’s permission since he was not happy with the MAGAts (see LA TImes, 2022). Then again, it’s probably protected speech (I am not a lawyer and if I were I would be Lionel Hutz) on parody satire/fair use grounds
Those proposed lyrics
We’re not gonna make it
No, we ain’t gonna make it
We’re not gonna make it, that’s for sure
We had the time to choose
But then we chose to lose it
We blew our chance, this is our wrong
We caved to the powers that be,
We sealed our destiny cause
We don’t know us, we are not strong
Oh you’re so shitpretending
Your lies are never ending
We got just nothing, not a thing from you
Your lies are trite and grating
Footnoted and obfuscating
And what’s the worst, is your worst just flew
We’re toast (yeah)
We’re doomed (yeah)
We’re ghosts
We’re tombed
We’re just gonna take it
And at the end, with the fade out we could sub in the audio from that Newsroom episode – “endless fires… storms that have the power to level cities…”
We’re not gonna take it anymore (just you try and make us)
We’re not gonna take it (come on!)
No, we ain’t gonna take it (you’re all worthless and weak)
We’re not gonna take it anymore (now drop and give me 20)
We’re not gonna take it (a pledge pin)
No, we ain’t gonna take it (on your uniform)
We’re not gonna take it anymore
