Oh god, what a waste of time and energy

I am not going to say what it was, but this is the message I left in the chat.

“This is all framed so individually and individualistically. In the absence of effective and resilient social movement organisations, there will be this endless boom-and-bust, guilt-spasms followed by burn out. But we are all so thoroughly neoliberalised we don’t even see this. It drives me crazy.”

All the lonely people, why do they all bleat on? (I know the answer to that).

  1. Marc, “This is all framed so individually and individualistically” and here lies the problem. Cellphones, the loss of the daily paper, aided by a biased media, has seen the population isolated, the local pub no longer is a meeting place and sport is watched from home, instead of going to the ground. Meaningful conversation is dying if not already dead.

The western world is sadly showing it’s age and the rest of the world is having teething troubles. It all reminds me of a current TV add for a supermarket, in which the man says “I don’t really care”.
I hope I’m not becoming depressed, am I?

  2. Hi Jon,
yes, there are a bunch of factors pushing us away from community and into our own little spheres. Over 30 years ago (omfg we are all getting old), I read a book for a uni course, by a guy called Kenneth Gergen – “The Saturated Self, Dilemmas of Identity in Contemporary Life”. This was before the “world wide web” and cell phones etc. i.e. the atomisation and ‘anomie’ was already underway… We are toast, because we can’t do sustained collective action any more, and the rich have figured out how to press our buttons, get us emoting instead of thinking.
    Depressed is surely rational, no?
