“Technofixes for environmental problems? Not gonna work” – a warning from… 1972

Benny Rothman was a mensch. This I knew. What I didn’t know was that his son, Harry Rothman, was an academic at University of Manchester. In 1972 a book of his was published- “Murderous providence : a study of pollution in industrial societies”

According to one blurb– “The author argues that pollution is basically a social and economic problem, rooted in the present irrational organisation of society, and that therefore all attempts to find a technological solution are doomed to failure because they deal with effects rather than causes. Only by creating a society which governs its actions by social, instead of private, economic rationality, can Mankind hope to live in an affluent and non-polluting culture. “

Oh well…

  1. Hi Marc, just come across your short piece about Harry Rothman’s book, Murderous Providence, while I was looking for an image of it to accompany an email I was writing to someone. The book came out while I was at Manchester Universtiy, an undergrad in the Liberal Studies Department, where he was one of my lecturers. It is ahead of its time. For instance, the chapter on Tourism! Best wishes, Costel Harnasz
